In Naples, immediately after World War II, a young orphan comes under the protection of Don Gaetano, the porter of an old building. A generous man, Don Gaetano tells him about the war and the liberation of the city, teaches him to play cards and initiates him into the world of sex by sending him to a widow who lives in the building.
