Event

Black dancers have been present in British ballet from at least the 1940s onwards but the presence and contribution of these pioneers has been largely forgotten. Into the Light: The Pioneers of Black British Ballet exhibition at Gloucester Library aims to change this by celebrating the lives of these trailblazers. 

 

Drop in to view this free exhibition during the library's open hours. Available for the month of January.

Fancy trying ballet in a less formal setting? Led by one of the dancers from the Black British Ballet Project, this fun and accessible ballet workshop introduces you to the basic ballet movements and will be followed by a short Q&A with the session leader.

This session is free to attend and welcoming of all ages and abilities.  Adults and children over the age of 2 require a ticket.

‘So what you’re saying is that there have been loads of black ballet dancers…’

Onisere wants to be a ballet dancer but there’s just one problem: she’s black and she’s never seen any other ballet dancers who look like her. Enter, the ballet queen, Simbira, who takes Onisere, and her annoying, football mad little brother Tayo, on a fantastical journey through the history of black British ballet.

Join us for a fun filled session of dance and storytelling to find out more about the black dancers who blazed a trail through British ballet! For children aged 4-8 years old.

 

This performance is free to attend Adults and children over the age of 2 require a ticket.

Booking is essential. If you suddenly can't make the event, please cancel your booking to enable someone else to attend.

Are you more of a poet or a critic or a blogger? Whoever you are, take your skills back in time to explore the stories of Black British ballet dancers. Taking images and quotes from the exhibition as our base, we’ll do some activities together before you get to write your masterpiece - or silly piece!

This session is free to attend and is aimed at 9-16 year olds.  Only participating 9-16 year olds require a ticket.
