The author, former chairman of the Royal Commission for Ancient & Historical Monuments Scotland is better-known in his homeland where he has pioneered the recording and research of industrial archaeology since the 1960s, but he has been visiting Gloucester since the 1980s and served on the boards of heritage organisations there. Not content to watch TV in his hotel room he has observed and photographed the city of Gloucester over the years and in this book tells as the title says the story of the place through the medium of its buildings which of course reflect the economic and developmental changes over the centuries.
