This memoir recounts the years spent as a child during the outbreak of World War Two and the ensuing German occupation of the Netherlands. It is not a history book but a very personal account, written from the perspective of a five year old girl growing up during this time. Hermine is determined not to seem like a baby to her older brothers and sisters, but her journey to understanding what is going on is fraught with incident. Daily life of the time is beautifully drawn, from snippets of good-natured sibling squabbles through to heart-breaking stories of individual heroism and barbarism, understood and misunderstood in equal measure by a child at a time when childhood was a luxury. This is the story of one girl and her family living through the tragedies and absurdities of war.
