The cottage in Mr Hick's garden mysteriously burns down one night, and five children think someone started the fire deliberately. Mr Goon, the local policeman, thinks so too, and isn't at all pleased to have the Five Find-Outers and dog nosing in on his mystery.

Lady Candling lives next door to Pip and Bets, and owns some very expensive, pedigree Siamese cats. When her most famous cat, Dark Queen, goes missing, the gardener's help, Luke seems the obvious suspect. The Five Find-Outers must solve the mystery to clear the name of their friend Luke.

Mr Good has forbidden the Five Find-Outers from solving mysteries - so they decide to make one up for his nephew, Ern! But what will happen when Ern disappears, and their pretend mystery turns into a real one?

In the cold and foggy Christmas holidays, it doesn't seem as though the Five Find-Outers will have anything exciting to investigate. Then they stumble on a single furnished room in an otherwise deserted house. They try to find out who the house belongs to, but they're not making much progress!

Fatty, Larry, Daisy, Pip and Bets are together once more for the Easter holidays and quickly become involved in a very peculiar situation, trying to solve the mystery of the spiteful letters that arrive, unsigned, for various people in Peterswood.
