Hazel Bannock is the owner of the Bannock Oil Corporation, one of the major global oil producers. While cruising in the Indian Ocean, her yacht is hijacked by Somalian pirates and her 19-year-old daughter Cayla is kidnapped.

After the fall of France in 1940, Louis Duval, a French artist, flees across the Channel in a small motor boat and reaches Dartmouth. Here he meets Barbara Hillyard, a young widow who is struggling to make ends meet by running a boarding house.
