Treasure Islands : The Fascinating World of Pirates, Buried Treasure and Fortune Hunters

Platt, Cameron and Wright, John1992
Book
In the 16th and 17th centuries, when the wealth of distant civilizations gravitated inexorably towards the capitals of Europe, the seas were busy with treasure ships. These ships, under armed escort and flying the standard of one of Europe's royal houses, were prey to the buccaneers and brigands who flourished on the relatively lawless seas. These pirated often accumulated huge fortunes which had to be stored somewhere, and an isolated and uninhabited island was the ideal refuge. But piracy is an unpredictable occupation and sometimes an appointment with a rope and yardarm prevented the buccaneer from recovering his trove, thus leaving it for the treasure hunter.
