Between Silk and Cyanide : The Story of S.O.E.'s Code War

Marks, Leo1998
Book
SOE (Special Operations Executive) was created in July 1940 with a mandate from Churchill to 'Set Europe Ablaze'. It's main functions was to infiltrate agents into enemy-occupied territory to perform acts of sabotage and form Secret Armies. Leo Marks joined SOE in 1942. He was twenty-two. A cryptographer of genius, he revolutionised the concept of agents' codes by the time he was twenty-three, devising and implementing a system of printing codes on silk-to be camouflaged as handkerchiefs, underwear, or coat linings-which could be destroyed message by message, and couldn't possibly be remembered.
