List of important dates in the history of Cheltenham's theatres from 1612 - 1960.1774 William and Sarah acted in Cheltenham.1781 The Old Playhouse fitted up and reopened Cheltenham Guide 1871, 1782 Theatre built in York Passage. Sarah Siddons acted here. 1788 King George III and Queen Charlotte visited this country Theatre, The King and Queen met Mrs Dorothea Jordan and the king was pleased and offered a patent to the theatre now called theatre Royal, 1831 New Clarence Theatre opened but destroyed by fire in 1839, 1854 The theatre Royal saw performers such as Macready, Edward Terry Martin Harvey. 1959 Theatre threatened with closure but saved by the forming of Cheltenham Theatre Association.
